“Imagine your pain fading away”
By sstiles

Whilst people usually only use pain medication to relieve their pain, there are some other methods that can help to relieve pain. Hypnosis and visualisation techniques can be effective ways to reduce pain.

Pain is usually an indication that you need to be pay attention to that part of your body so pain should not be removed or reduced without good reason. These techniques are most appropriate for chronic pain which has been diagnosed.

Before using any techniques to reduce pain you should check with an appropriate medical professional to make sure that the cause of the pain does not need medical attention and that it is safe to reduce the pain.

Dissolve the pain away

Focus on the pain. Where do you feel it? If the pain was an object how would you describe it? Is it hard, soft, large, small, spiky, blobby, coloured, transparent? What other qualities does it have? When you can visualise it then visualise it dissolving and fading away. You might want to imagine the colour fading out of it or the edges becoming fuzzy, the size becoming smaller or the complete object starting to break up. Keep focusing on the object as it dissolves away until it has completely gone.

Wash the pain away

If you find it difficult to visualise things then imagine the pain being washed away, massaged away, floating away, or taken away by any other physical activity that you can imagine that removes things.

Transfer a pain-free feeling

If the pain is only in part of your body then focus on a pain-free part of your body and imagine the feeling that you have in that part of your body spreading through your body to the painful part. If your hands are pain-free then you could even place your hand on the painful part of your body and imagine the painless feeling soaking into the painful part and reducing the pain.

If you have used a cream in the past which has reduced the pain then you could gently rub the painful area with your hand or if that’s not possible ask someone else to do so. Whilst you are doing that imagine a soothing cream being rubbed into the painful area that reduces the uncomfortable feeling. If you have had injections for pain relief then use the same technique as I have just described but lightly tough the painful area with a finger and imagine an anaesthetic flowing into the area and taking away the pain.

Use regularly

Whilst these techniques are very unlikely to take the pain away permanently they should give you some temporary pain relief. If the pain comes back again then you can simply repeat the process, just as you repeatedly take pain relief medication. You should find that the techniques will become more effective as you get used to using them.

Sometimes it helps if someone else talks you through the techniques so that you have less to think about. A hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner or EFT practitioner will have pain relief techniques similar to these that they can use with you.
